Background:

Swiftclaw was hatched in the School's Hatchery, but his birth was unusual: He was never placed on the pedestal by a viking. He was found by Layana wandering around the hatchery. She took him to Hiccup, who identified him as a Snifflehunch, and asked if she wanted to raise him. Of course she said yes, and she spent the next year teaching him the viking way of life and training him to respect peoples' boundaries- without much luck- and he learned quickly. 

As he grew, Layana trained him to accept a person's weight on his back. When he was used to the weight, she made him a saddle, and he adapted quickly (after a few huts were set on fire). The pair now adventure to islands all around the Archipelago and go on search and rescue missions.
